XVI Sahara Marathon 2016
I will be running the Sahara Marathon on February 23, 2016 to support the Saharawi refugees. The Saharawis were displaced during the Western Sahara War (1975-1991) and have been living in refugees camps near Tindouf, Algeria ever since. Your donation will go towards a project to promote the participation of Saharawi women and girls in sports.

    Dear All,

Am back from Algeria! With several days delay because on our last day sandstorms moved in..., which meant that our charter flight could not land in Tindouf and bring us back to Madrid. Life really come to a standstill when sandstorms hit the camps, which apparently happens very regularly. In the next few weeks I will be creating a photo album along with my daily blog posts.
In the next few weeks I will also be writing several articles, including a photo essay, about the situation of the Saharawi refugees and possible also on the marathon itself. I will keep you posted.
I am planning on getting involved in the organization of next year's marathon and/or run again.
Thank you again for your engagement and your generous financial contributions. We made the €750 target!

    Warm wishes,
    -Frank

Yesterday I witnessed the children's olympics and 150 m dash in which almost all elementary and middle school students of the Smara refugee camp (population: ~30,000) participated. Quite a sight to see thousands of boys and girls run! And thank you again for your donations, which will guarantee the continued participation of Saharawi women and girls in these sports events. We almost made the target!

Ran the marathon yesterday. Amazing experience being cheered on in Arabic in the one camp that we passed at 21 km. The rest of the course was sand, rocks, dunes, sand and more sand... grueling... Did I mention the beating sun? Anyway, I managed to finish in 4:23. As of today the focus is on the olympics for school children and various community projects to help with restoring the many structures that have been severely damaged during the storms and torrential rains last October.

Yesterday was my first day in the Smara refugee camp in Algeria, in the desert near the border with Morocco, Mauritania and Western Sahara. We are hosted by the tens of thousands displaced Saharawis who have lived here for over 25 hours. Two days until the marathon!
