Volunteer Tea Pick

Keith in Sri Lanka September - December 2019

Hello!

I am out here in Sri Lanka for 3 months, supporting the work of Tea Leaf Vision and I would very much value your support.

Well, I am doing a sponsored tea pick to find out. I will pick tea alongside professional tea pickers for four hours... it is backbreaking labour in the sunshine and worse when it is rainy season. I will then weigh my tea and get told what salary I would have earned (less than a couple of quid) but my wages will be given to my tea picking mentor. I would love your support. So, here's some things that I didn't know until I signed up to volunteer:

I didn't know for example that 80% of students at the charity's Tea Leaf Vision School live off less than $1 a day, or that this area is a hotspot for suicide in a country that already has the 4th highest suicide rate in the world. Nor did I know that 83% of female tea pickers experience regular domestic violence and 80% of the men are alcoholics. This all creates a pretty hopeless picture... but...

The Tea Leaf Trust works in the heart of the tea plantations in Sri Lanka, helping young people to gain the skills required to get employment away from the harsh reality of the tea estate industry. The school offers free, full-time diplomas for students between the ages of 18 and 24. In return, and as part of the programme, the students themselves teach Basic English to over 1,800 children a week for free!

Over 80% of graduates find employment or further education/training within a year and those working earn an average of 50% than their counterparts. On top of this, these students become ethical leaders in their communities, leading real change.

Please give what you can... even the cost of a cup of tea will help!

I arrived back in Bath last night and I am mainly writing to thank you all for your support, as I know many of you supported my Fundraisers and also followed me on my Blog (keithinsrilanka.blogspot.com). In terms of the Fundraisers, I had one on Facebook, that raised £300 and, when this one ran out of time, I renewed it and it raised another £40. My main Fundraiser in the end was through this Tea Leaf Trust site, and that raised £853, so, in total, I raised £1,293, which I was pleased with. I want to send a huge thank you to everyone who helped me to raise this money for the work of Tea Leaf Vision.

This is yet another thank you to the people who have donated recently and pushed my Fundraiser to almost 77% of my target. I am pretty close now to reaching that £1,000 total, so please do think about making a donation to the Tea Leaf Trust for the amazing work that they do to support some of the poorest people in the Tea Leaf Plantations Communities if you haven't done so already.
