Jenny & Frankie's ongoing fundraiser in aid of TLV
So, we did indeed get to see for ourselves just how extremely challenging it is to partake in the task of tea picking. Even though we all ventured out to the tea plantation and picked tea leaves under a scorching sun, we only actually spent three hours doing so. It was gruelling, most of us were besieged by leeches, mosquitoes, ants and narrowly avoided a upsetting a swarm of bees!
To put it into context; the real tea pickers (the vast majority of whom are Tamil women) are obliged to pick between 16 and 18 kilos of tea leaves a day in order to make enough money to feed their families.
We've been here for two weeks already and continue volunteering at Tea Leaf Vision School with young people who have been born and raised on the tea plantation.
Both Jenny and myself have decided to leave the ongoing fundraiser open indefinitely. The main reason for this is the fact that we are greatly inspired by both the Tea Leaf Vision and the Tea Leaf Trust projects. We feel that on a personal level, wherever we are in the world we will always want to check in on our friends, acquaintances and students.
We would love your support. Here are some things that we didn't know until we signed up to volunteer:
We didn't know, for example, that 80% of students at the charity's Tea Leaf Vision School live off less than $1 a day, or that this area is a hotspot for suicide in a country that already has the 4th highest suicide rate in the world. Nor did we know that 83% of female tea pickers experience regular domestic violence and 80% of the men are alcoholics. This may seem like a bleak picture, but...
Tea Leaf Trust work in the heart of the tea plantations in Sri Lanka, helping young people to gain the skills required to get employment away from the harsh reality of the tea estate industry. The school offers free, full-time diplomas for students between the ages of 18 and 24. In return, and as part of the programme, the students themselves teach Basic English to over 1,800 children a week for free!
Over 80% of graduates find employment or further education/training within a year and those working earn an average of 50% more than their counterparts. On top of this, these students become ethical leaders in their communities, leading real change.
Please give what you can, even the cost of a cup of tea will help!
